my 365 Day Struggle to Know Christ; Day 5

Day 5, August 13, 2011

Today was a wonderful day of fun and fellowship with the wonderful people from my work.  We celebrated the fifth anniversary of the business I work for today.  It was so much fun to go to the park and celebrate this accomplishment together over food and games.  My wife also enjoyed shopping at our public library sale, the pawnshop, and a thrift store.  It is always fun to pillage through such shops and sales to find what treasures may be hiding there.

We ended our night with a movie my wife loves and even got to enjoy a wonderful thunderstorm in the middle.  All in all the Lord provided a beautiful day of joy, peace, and fellowship.  I am so thankful for the days like today.  Isn’t incredible to have a day filled with only joy.  I hope you all had a blessed day as well and were filled with the Joy of our Savior.

Blessings,

Greg

My 365 Day Struggle to Know Christ; Day 4

Day 4 August 12, 2011

Today has been a long day.  I hurt; I’m broken; and I am tired.  It is so amazing (and annoying) that it always seems that the area of your life you choose to work on is the area where you receive the most trials.  As I work on reading What’s So Amazing About Grace, I was bombarded with loads of opportunities to offer and live grace and today I crashed and burned on most of those opportunities.

In my job as a maintenance technician, I deal with all sorts of task and some times they are highly physically oriented.  Today was one of those days as my coworker and I worked to cut down dead trees on the property of the business we work for.  Both of us are definitely novices when it comes to using a chain saw and as we ran into situations and problems our tensions got a little high from our differing view of what was causing the problem.

I believed that the problem was just the stump we were working on while my colleague believed the chain saw needed to be sharpened.  My colleague was most likely right and even if he wasn’t it definitely wouldn’t have hurt to at least give his solution a shot but in my normal stubborn manner I chose to work myself to the bone trying to saw through the stump to prove him wrong.  I did accomplish sawing through the stump but at a much greater effort than was necessary.  On top of all that I frustrated my coworker by not even giving his solution merit.  This was not Christ-like in any way or necessary.

I am so thankful that the Lord does not extend the grace to me that I give to others.  I am so thankful that he is way more patient with me than I am with others also.  Though today was a bust, I am so grateful I have the opportunity to live in the Lord’s grace and love anew tomorrow and hopefully I can live more like Jesus and less like me tomorrow.

Jesus,

Please help me to live you love and grace each day.  I do not want to only offer a lip service to you but my every being.  Thank you for your love and grace when I am being hardheaded and stubborn.  Draw near Lord.  Guide me and lead me in your ways.  Make my steps yours and my words yours.  I love you and thank you.

Humbly,

Greg

My 365 day struggle to know Jesus-Day 3

Day 3; August 11, 2011

It seems that at the beginning of this one-year struggle, I am to understand grace and how to live it and offer it to the people around me.  This morning as I walked through the barn at work I saw a book on the shelf in the office called What’s So Amazing About Grace? by Philip Yancey.  I decided to sit down and read the1st chapter of the book after thoroughly enjoying the book Outrageous Love by Sheila Walsh a couple weeks before.  In the book Yancey spoke about how grace was one of the greatest unspoiled words in the world.

It struck me as profound that in order to know Jesus I have to accept the grace he gives me.  This concept was accentuated when I came home and had a deep talk about life, love, Christianity, fears, and joys with my wife.  In our conversation Jesus pressed on my heart the fact that I had to accept grace to know His love.  Without accepting Jesus’ grace, I cannot know Him.

Accepting our Lord’s grace requires me to let my past sins and failures go, to not punish myself for things I have failed miserably at, to not take back my forgiven burdens, and to allow Jesus’ love and grace flow over me freely and completely.  I am need of learning to see myself how Jesus sees me and trust the pure image of myself that He reflects in His mirror before me.

In this world we are not quick to offer ourselves or others grace.  This is especially true for me because I have a huge need for justice both in my life and in the world.  Justice does not extend grace because the punishment you receive is exactly what you deserve.  I have such trouble wrapping my head around the concept that I receive from Christ the exact opposite of what I deserve and that in Jesus it is good.

Do you struggle to accept grace for your past failures, sins, struggles, pains, abuses, addictions, etc?  Will you allow Jesus to wipe your slate clean, free you from your past, and prepare you for a future of ministry of kingdom proportions?  I don’t know about you but I struggled for the longest time with feeling as though my past excluded me from offering any kingdom influence in my life.  With Jesus, that is not so.  He creates a new creation in each of us and fills us with the power of the Holy Spirit to bear a light to a lost and dying world.

Will you stand up and find strength in this that offers you freedom and power in Christ?  Let go of all that is keeping you from His perfect love and the grace he completed on Calvary as He arose on the third day.  By the very definition of grace, we do not deserve what we receive from Jesus but aren’t you so glad that He saw fit to offer it to us anyways!

My 365 day struggle to know Jesus-Day 2

Day 2, August 10, 2011

So as I begin day two of this journey, it is hard to not think about the fact that I am a youth minister at a church and I am a maintenance technician who also leads worship at a Christian eating disorder facility.  To some of you the concept may be bothersome but to others maybe not so much.  To me, I sit and wonder why Jesus has me in the positions he has me in right now.  I do not wonder if he put me in the positions I have now because I know with full confidence that he orchestrated where I am.  It feels like such a mystery to me that at one avenue I know exactly what Jesus wants for my life and then on other things I have no clue.

Part of this challenge for me is reconnecting with Jesus on a daily basis.  I definitely believe He is active and working in my life.  I know that I have been saved by His saving grace also.  What eats at me is that I do not feel as though I have a direct relationship with Him.  I do not feel as though we share a daily connection.  I do not allow Him to lead all areas of my life.

The lesson that we taught tonight in youth was a video from Disciple 2 Disciple ministry.  It was about How do you do the Christian life?  The speaker, Greg, really had some great things to say and spoke about John 15:1-8 where Jesus spoke about being the vine and us being the branches.  It requires us to fully lean and depend on Jesus to produce growth and fruit.  It is impossible to do anything to further the kingdom without depending on the Jesus.

Just that one concept really stuck in my soul. It is impossible to do anything to further the kingdom without depending on the Jesus.  We live in such a world today where we are told that through determination and will we can accomplish anything.  All we have to do is want it bad enough and never give up.  My wife and I were watching the Adjustment bureau the other day where the moral of the story was that God has always intended for us to make our own path and exert our own free will.  This world’s message is it is all about the individual.  We can do anything even defy God and God is pleased with that.  It is no wonder that we struggle so much as Christians to know Jesus.  Many of us spend more time trying to figure out how we can live our life on top of serving Jesus instead of realizing and accepting that we have no life without Jesus.

Jesus,

I come to you humbly surrendering my will to you tonight.  I am so sorry for the many times in my life that I have ripped the reigns of my heart from your hands vainly thinking that I could lead my life better than you.  Please take complete control of my heart.  I ask that you come in and cultivate, prune, prepare, and seed the garden of my heart that I may grow and produce your fruit.  Help me to remember that I can do nothing without you.  That my life is truly and completely dependent upon you and the Holy Spirit to lead, guide, protect, and prepare the way for each moment of my day.  I love you Lord.  Forgive me for my rebellion.  May I completely open myself up to you.
Your Servant,

Greg

I hope that you would find peace and solace in the fact that Jesus is the core of your life.  He is the vine and you are the branch.  Let him fill you with the spirit of life.  Allow him to grow you and produce fruit in you.  Be willing to trust Him when he prunes you.  Even though you may experience pain, trust that he is pruning your heart for maximum growth.  Jesus loves us.  He is kind and gentle.  He only seeks the best for us in the way of extending His kingdom.  May you all have peace tonight.

Blessings

My 365 Day Struggle to Know Christ; Day 1

 Day 1, August 9, 2011

So the Lord laid on my heart this idea, a challenge really, of spending a year working to truly know and understand Jesus.  Now some of you might be saying that no one could truly know Jesus in a year’s time and I would have to agree with you but what if we are wrong?  What if we can truly know Jesus in a year’s time and more importantly what if we can truly know Jesus better than we do today in a year’s time?  Some of you might be scoffing at this point that of course you would know Jesus better a year from now and maybe you are right.  But for the rest of you out there who are completely honest, you know that you have gone a year’s time before without knowing Jesus better scripturally, spiritually, relationally, or otherwise.  I have been there.  I have made the New Year resolutions to grow leaps and bounds spiritually each year and yet come to the next year at the exact some place I started.  Sometimes if I am honest, I have come to the New Year with a worse heart condition than the year before.  Why is that?  Why would we profess Jesus as our Savior and only means to heaven and then not spend time to know Him better?

Well I am tired of it.  I plan to change all that.  I plan to struggle, to strive, to wage war against anything or anyone standing in my way, even myself, keeping me from knowing Jesus better.  My complacency has continued long enough.  I am tired of year after year of disappointment, backsliding, wondering, and weakness in my walk.  I want to know Jesus for real.  I want a relationship with Him.  I want to be able to speak His name with a confident assurance.  Will you join me?

Maybe you are saying right now that this challenge is too tough, too radical, or just plain dumb?  Maybe you don’t believe that you could ever truly have a relationship with Jesus because you have been too bad, done one too many things, hurt too many people, etc.  I’ve been there.  Maybe you think Christianity is a farce because of the many “Christians”, and “Church members” who have hurt and utterly convinced you against the reality of Jesus as Savior.  I’ve been there.  Maybe you’re just too tired.  You have tried everything to know Jesus better and yet you have made no progress.  Maybe you feel like it is time for Jesus to come and initiate a relationship with you.  I’ve been there.

Though I grew up a preacher’s kid and even say that I have been in the church since before I was born, I am nothing special and can completely resound Paul’s statement of being the worst of sinners.  I was not protected from temptations, sins, struggles, weakness, doubts, or anything else even though loving Christian parents raised me.  My life, my walk, my marriage, and my friendships were all almost destroyed as I was dragged to the bottom of the pit of sin through an addiction to pornography.  The devil bruised and battered me, challenged and confused me, lectured and twisted me until I believed that I deserved to be in the bottom of the pit and believed I could never be free from the addiction of pornography or any other sin.  I have been there.  I have felt as though there was no God at all.  I have struggled with love, grace, forgiveness, and truth.  Trust me when I say, “I have been there!”

Know that you are not alone in the struggle to know Jesus.  Many have been there and many are in the struggle today with you.  I hope you will join me.  I believe that amazing and wonderful things will happen in this challenge.  I believe that we can know God in new and different ways.  I believe there will be dark days and even days of failure.  I believe that I will face days when I will want to quit and give up but I believe that Jesus is worth it.  I believe he can and will sustain me and I trust that if I seek to know Him, to truly know Him, that I will find Him and know Him in ways I cannot even imagine.  I hope you will join me.  I hope you will share with me.  I hope to help you in your own struggle.

Blessings,

Greg

Riptide of Life

This past week my wife and I went on a much needed vacation to the panhandle of Florida.  This vacation was enhanced by the fact that we got to share it with my parent and my grandmother (aka: granny).  You have to understand that for me being a 14 hour trip away from the ocean is strange and undesirable.  Most of my life I have been a day trip from the beach and water is a very important and enjoyable part of my life story.  I love the water.  I love swimming in it, playing in it, boating in it, and just enjoying the beauty of it.

It truly did my soul good to spend some time at the beach.  I wanted to enjoy this vacation to the fullest so when we were packing the vehicle I was sure to include our swim stuff, bikes, and kayak (for good measure).  My best friend and I had talked many times about kayaking on the ocean and riding the waves in and I wasn’t about to miss out on this experience.  On the first morning after we arrived I walked out to get something from our vehicle and was astonished by a beautiful rainbow in the sky.  There was peace upon seeing the rainbow as I felt the Lord saying that us being on this vacation was good.

Mel and I didn’t hesitate to go see the beach and we even woke up early to go and run on the beach the second day.  Granny joined us because she also was very excited to see the beach.  Everything was wonderful just like I had dreamed about in the weeks leading up to the vacation.  The sand was a glorious, soft white color.  The ocean was filled with beautiful translucent light blues, greens, aquamarines, and midnight blue colors.  The waves were rolling in gently and the seagulls were singing high above as the pelicans lumbered along the ocean seeking out their morning breakfast.

I got to do everything I intended to do.  I had a great time riding out on the kayak, paddling against the waves to the smoother water out in the deep.  The gentle glide of the kayak through the water was almost ethereal as I watched my shadow dance along the shallow sand.  I was in heaven as I sat and enjoyed the gentle rock of my boat back and force.  It was so interesting to view the shore from such a different perspective.  How beautiful to see the many umbrellas and chairs along the shoreline; to watch the children laugh and scream as the waves covered their feet, to see families walking along observing the sights; and to watch my family monitoring me, making sure I was okay and still in my boat.  Bringing the kayak was truly worth it as I got to enjoy a few days of paddling out even experiencing a little kayak surfing and the challenge of paddling in rougher waters.

As the week went on, my wife and I enjoyed spending time together as we took a trip to Panama City beach to visit Wonderworks and the Ripley’s Believe it or not Museum.  Wonderworks was by and far our favorite attraction as we enjoyed the many hands on exhibits it had to offer.  We really had fun experiencing everything the museum had to offer from lying down on a bed of nails, to riding a 360 bike that took you upside down.  The museum even had a ropes course and laser tag arena.  Amidst all the fun the best part of the day was that we got to do it together.  We even enjoyed a romantic dinner at Olive Garden where we enjoyed soup, salad, and breadsticks (yes even in 90 degree heat).

Later on in the week the waves at the beach really began to pickup because of tropical storm Don.  Though Don did not hit in our area it churned through the gulf and raised the waves to levels I had not seen before.  In light of this wonderful opportunity for wave boarding, I talked my wife into letting me get a quality wave board that is actually made for a 6’4” 200+ pound person.  Dad even came out and rode the waves with me.  We both had a lot of fun though the waves thrashed us all over the place.  It was incredibly hard to stay standing, much less make it out to a good wave riding spot.  Also I have to admit that these waves were intimidating.  After the first couple of tries I learned that you couldn’t just throw your board in and gently ride to shore.  No if you weren’t careful you would be pounded into the sand and tumbled to shore.  Though this concerned me and definitely added a greater challenge to the wave riding adventure, I still continued to go out and try to conquer the mighty waves.  Many times I failed miserably as the mighty ocean mopped the floor with me but every now and then I would get a hold of a wave just right and with lightning speed rush for the shoreline on a torrent of water.  These moments made it all worthwhile.

On the last day, my dad and I were once again battling the mighty waves trying with all our might to land a couple good rides into shore.  This day was even more powerful than the day before and the waves were truly brutal and incredibly difficult to ride.  After spending about 45 minutes in this intense arena of waves, I decided I would try for one more epic wave and then come in and rest.  My body was really getting tired and I knew I couldn’t take the beatings from the waves much longer.  In trying to catch a ride on an epic wave I took myself out to far and got caught by a rip tide.  Before I knew it I was past the point that I could touch, floating up and down to 6-8ft swells, and honestly at that point extremely scared.  No amount of kicking was doing anything to bring me closer to shore and in fact it seemed as though I was just being pulled farther and farther out.  As I watched my dad who was in a safe part of the ocean yell at me that I needed to come back in, it was all that I could do to not panic at the situation I had found myself in.

I began a very quick and desperate conversation with God and I relied completely on the buoyancy of  the new wave board I had purchased.  I honestly at that point had no idea what to do and had no strength to try to swim back in.  I just sat there floating up and down with the swells praying that the Lord would deliver me from the situation I had put myself in.  I cried out to Him to bring me a wave that would push me back to shore.  Desperately I waited as I watched the waves behind me and observed my concerned father in front of me.  Finally, a massive swell began to mount behind me and I knew that this would be my only chance to get to shore but also new this wave was to large for me to ride safely.  My fear of be swept away completely from the shore outweighed my fear of the wave and so I positioned myself to ride the wave into the shore.  As the wave continued to build higher and higher, I remember looking down the board and holding on for dear life.  The wave crushed me on the bottom smearing my face and shoulder into the sand on top of creating some rather loud popping noises from my back and neck.

When I surfaced again, all I could feel was pain as I feared that my neck had been broken on the bottom of the deep.   Suddenly my feet discovered the bottom again and I was able to stand.  My eyes were closed due to the pain from the wounds I had sustained in the tumble but I was able to limp forward toward the shore.  I felt every movement as I labored to the shore against the continual beating of the waves from behind.  Once on dry land I slowly made my way back to where my family was sitting as I through squinting eyes found them.  My walk was slow and painful with blood dripping off my brow but none of that mattered because I was alive and standing!  Who cares about a few scrapes and bruises, those things could heal.  I was just glad to be alive, to be on solid ground, and to be with my family who loves me.

When I asked God for a wave to bring me to shore, I had not intended to be crushed in the process.  Sometimes we get ourselves into situations we shouldn’t and the pain is necessary for us to be released to freedom.  The scars we gain as we break free from the nightmares we are or were in help to remind us what we have been delivered from and why we don’t want to go back to that place again.  Have you been swept out to the sea of sin?  Are you desperately crying out to Jesus to bring you back to the shore of grace and peace?  Well hold on because our Lord will answer your prayers though you may not like how he does it.  Always know that the Lord intends the best for you and sometimes pain is necessary for healing.  If you can relate to this story, I hope that once you make it to shore that you can see past the pain you feel to the life you have been given and the love that surrounds you.

Blessings and peace to you.

Silence is Golden

I have had a great problem with speaking before knowing all the facts in my life. As you can imagine, this habit has not exactly attracted loads of people my way. I learn more each day and would like to think that I hold my tongue much better than I did when I was younger. Unfortunately this personality quirk still surfaces every now and then and gets me into a heap of trouble like it used to. One of these incidents happened the other night and cost me more trouble than I had any intention of creating. The worst part about this incident is that it could have all been avoided if I had only chose to listen before I spoke.

In life it is much easier to fall down a hill than to climb back up it. All it takes is one flick of the tongue and you can destroy or deeply damage a friendship, trust, an agreement, a marriage, a job, and the list goes on and on. The worst part about it is that it is essentially impossible to reverse the impact once the words have slipped out of your mouth. In the lawyer shows that most of us enjoy watching, we know that the lawyers intentionally throw out comments that are not allowed because they know even if the Judge tells the jury to disregard the comment that it will still be in the jury's minds. If you accidentally cause a forest fire, the damage is not automatically repaired because you are sorry. It requires firefighters, time, and care to fully restore the burnt land and it will never look the same as it once did. Well our words work the same way. The Bible says in James that our tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity.

Knowing this helps us to be careful of the words we speak. It helps us to make sure we have all the facts before opening our mouth and hopefully cautions us from saying things we can't take back. Unlike a forest fire, we as humans have the ability to forgive and extend grace when hurtful words are given accidentally. I praise the Lord that he cultivates these qualities in those who know him. Though I do not mean the harm I cause by my words, it does not negate the pain I inflict by not measuring my words carefully.

Thank you Jesus for your love and grace that helps to heal relationships when we are hurtful. Please offer me your wisdom to know when to speak and when not to speak. The Serenity prayer speaks volumes to this issue, "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference." If only I could live that prayer each day, I believe life would be much easier to live. God gave us two ears and one mouth for a reason. Oh that we would learn to listen, truly listen, before even considering to open our mouths.
